What is Asbestos Management or Asbestos Abatement?
Asbestos management and/or abatement involves mitigating the risk of asbestos contamination on your site by managing the on-site asbestos rather than removing it. The reason for managing asbestos contamination in this way is largely driven by cost and convenience.
Managing the Risk of
Building Work or Renovations
Even an act as simple as drilling a hole in a wall can result in the release of asbestos fibres. We recommend all premises, where asbestos is known to be present, contact us before undertaking any building or maintenance work. We can assess the risk of any work before it takes place and create an asbestos management plan to ensure the safety of workers and occupants.
Example: An electrician is upgrading the wiring in your building. If that electrician is drilling holes in the walls or ceiling, and those surfaces contain asbestos, dust will be released posing a risk to the electrician and other occupants of the building. Our asbestos abatement specialists can give advice and recommend procedures that will ensure everyone’s safety.
Wear and Tear on
Asbestos Products
Like any other building product, asbestos will degrade over time, especially when exposed to the weather. These degrading products can release asbestos fibres and cause health issues for the building’s occupants. As asbestos experts, we can visit your site and assess how to best avoid the issue of asbestos contamination caused by ageing asbestos products. Removal may be an option but the risk may also be able to be contained through asbestos management.
Example: An asbestos roof will degrade over time and release asbestos fibres unless that fibre release is managed. In a case like this, we might encapsulate the roof by first cleaning it, and then coating it to ensure all fibres are contained, and saving on the cost of reroofing.
On-Going Asbestos Management Planning
Some older buildings contain several sources of asbestos which need continual monitoring. The Health and Safety at Work (Asbestos) Regulations 2016 place a duty on businesses to have asbestos management plans in place for workplaces where asbestos is likely to be found.
