Can I Remove my Own Asbestos?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions we receive. There are two categories of asbestos. The process of removal is mainly driven by these categories:

  • Class A – Friable asbestos MUST be removed by a licensed asbestos removal company with an A-Class License.
  • Class B – Non-Friable asbestos can be removed in SPECIFIC situations.

Friable Asbestos

Friable Asbestos (Class A) or ACM

This type of asbestos is in powder form or is able to be crumbled to a powder by hand-pressure when dry. This is the riskiest form of asbestos because it can become airborne easily. It includes asbestos lagging, asbestos insulation and damaged asbestos board.

Friable Asbestos MUST be removed by asbestos specialists with an A-Class License. All A-Class asbestos removal work must include air monitoring carried out by a licensed Asbestos Assessor. This monitoring must be assessed by an accredited asbestos laboratory.

Non-Friable Asbestos

Non-Friable Asbestos (Class B)

Nonl-friable asbestos is not able to be crumbled to a powder by hand. This means it is usually safer than Friable Asbestos because the asbestos fibres are bonded into the product. This does not mean it is perfectly safe, however.

Non-Friable Asbestos is likely to release fibres if it is disturbed or damaged, e.g. by cutting or drilling.

If more than 10m2 must be removed from a project, it must be removed by a licensed asbestos removal contractor. If less than 10m2 is to be removed, the removal can be carried out by a non-licensed person, however, that person and others must be protected from exposure, and all asbestos must be disposed of at a licensed asbestos disposal facility.

We can remove both friable & non-friable asbestos from:
